23rd March 2014, from the Music at The Museum Concert Series

The choir is the most senior of the 3 choirs at Newtown School, Waterford. The group’s repertoire includes a range of religious music, folk music, spirituals and music from the popular and contemporary genres. The choir has toured Germany, where they represented Ireland at the youth artistic programme at expo in Hanover in 2000. They have also travelled to the Czech Republic (2005), Italy (2008), Northern Ireland (2010), and in 2011 had the privilege of performing as guests of the Lochrian ensemble at a St Patrick’s Day concert at the church of St. Martin in the fields in London.

They are past winners of the mixed voice post-primary schools competition at the Cork International Choral Festival on a number of occasions, most recently in 2011. They have enjoyed premiering pieces by leading Irish composers Michael McGlynn (Suantraí), Greg Scanlon (Oíche), and Br. Ben Hanlon (Duilleoga) at the festival in 2005, 2007 and 2010 respectively. Newtown School Chamber Choir is directed by Fintan Scanlon.
